Where does the value lie for bettors in this important Big Ten matchup?

Purdue vs Ohio State Prediction

Winners of five of their last six, Purdue is on a roll. They’ve been on fire offensively, scoring at least 80 points and covering the spread in four of their last five as well.

Today they’ll take on a Buckeyes team that profiles as a similar, albeit slightly worse, version of themselves. Purdue ranks 1st nationally in adjusted offensive efficiency and 78th defensively, while Ohio State is 14th and 96th, per Bart Torvik. Purdue is 7th in 2-point shooting and 3rd in 3-point shooting, whereas Ohio State is 13th and 31st, respectively.

Both teams protect the basketball but don’t force many turnovers on defense, so the offenses should be able to operate without much trouble.

Purdue does have two large advantages, though. First, the Boilermakers are 7th in offensive rebounding percentage and 19th in defensive, while Ohio State is just 131st and 125th. Second, Purdue 25th in offensive free throw rate and 20th in defensive. The Buckeyes rank 91st and 148th, respectively. By getting second-chance opportunities through offensive rebounding and freebie points at the charity stripe, Purdue should be able to generate extra points that Ohio State won’t have the chance to.

If there’s a concern for Purdue, it’s their defense outside the arc. Against Ohio State’s 31st-ranked 3-point shooting offense, the Boilermakers will need to contain the perimeter in order to cover. With just the 142nd-best 3-point defense, this has been the biggest issue for Purdue all season.

Against a team that can go blow-for-blow with them offensively, I think nine points is a large spread for Purdue to cover. If they’re able to make free throws, it won’t matter. But after going just 10/22 from the line against Iowa, I worry they’ll let Ohio State hang around and cover the number.

Instead of the spread, I’ll be looking to the total. With two high-power offenses and lackluster defenses, I think 145 is a bit too low. The over is 6-2 in Purdue’s last eight home games and 5-1 in Ohio State road games this year. I expect a lot of points in this one as Ohio State comes out firing to try and pull off the upset. Give me the over 145 as my best bet this morning.

Whether you like the total or prefer a bet on the spread, head on over to WynnBET and place your bet now.
