Willis Situation Still Unchanged

The Boiling Point: Derek Willis is still committed to Purdue, for now.

After conflicting reports about big-time 2013 basketball recruit Derek Willis having second thoughts on his pledge to Purdue, his father, Del, said there’s been no change in Derek’s commitment on Friday. Del also emphasized him and his son haven’t been directly contacted by either coaching staffs at Kentucky or Louisville, two schools the Kentucky stud might be interested in now.

"“We still haven’t sat down and talked at this point but we will soon,” Del Willis told Jody Demling of the Louisville Courier-Journal. “There’s a lot out there but right now there’s no change.”"

Del also clarified a quote about his lack of trust for Kentucky’s John Calipari and Louisville’s Rick Pitino.

"“Trust is something in any relationship, you have to earn it,” Del Willis said. “I don’t know those coaches and I have never met them. We have been to Purdue and we have had interaction with the coaches, so we have built a trust with them already. I just don’t trust anyone that I don’t know.”"

It appears the family is going to continue to talk about the situation over the weekend with a decision coming by Sunday on whether or not Derek is opening his recruitment again. Willis pledged to Purdue coach Matt Painter back in April and then blew up on the AAU circuit. The 6-foot-8 wing is already ranked as one of the best recruits in the country.
