The Boiling Point: Former Boilermaker pitcher Jay Buente has been called up to the major leagues by the Florida Marlins.

Former Purdue pitcher Jay Buente has been called up by the Florida Marlins and is expected to make his first Major League start today. The Marlins are hosting the Tampa Bay Rays in interleague play.

Buente has been playing with the Marlins Triple-A affiliate, the New Orleans Zyphers. Buente had a 1.94 ERA and 3-0 record over five starts and five relief appearances for the Zyphers. He also led the Pacific league in ERA and in 41 2/3 innings he has struck out 44 batters. Buente played for Purdue from 2003-2006. He was selected by the Marlins in the 14th round of the 2004 MLB First-Year Player Draft.
